About the IGDA Game Writing SIG
The IGDA Game Writing SIG is the world’s first and oldest professional organization for video game writers. Founded in 2002, the SIG has served as both a welcoming community for game writers and an advocacy organization promoting the art and craft of game writing as well as the professional needs of those engaged in the field.
The SIG was formed with the mission to bring video game writing away from being an industry after-thought to making game narrative and story into something that could be the central selling point for games. This was an ambitious goal at the time, when graphics quality was the only thing featured in marketing and raved about in reviews. While games were using technological advances to improve their graphics, it took human creativity to elevate game stories, so the SIG focused on developing game writers.
Over the years, the SIG has produced some remarkable achievements. In addition to fostering a sense of community and opportunities for professional networking, it also produced the first white paper outlining the roles, duties, and professional needs of game writing, with an eye toward standardizing the craft across the industry and getting respect for all those doing the work, regardless of their internal title. The SIG then built on that whitepaper by creating three seminal books on video game writing:

These books broke new ground, laying out industry best practices for writing for games, and featured a wide array of some of the top game writing talent in the industry. They have been used for decades as classroom texts, had multiple printings and second editions. Other initiatives included the long-running and popular Write Club event held every year at GDC, collating a library of game scripts for member reference, mentoring new writers, script workshopping and other benefits.
The SIG remains vital to this day, sponsoring gatherings at major video game conferences and maintaining a robust online presence. From its earliest beginnings, it has served the needs of the broad game writer community. Story is now respected as a key differentiator in video games, and narrative possibilities are being explored in new ways every day. As game writing itself changes, the SIG will continue taking on challenges for the benefits of all its members and game writing as a whole.
